The fruits of hawthorn are a classic “heart” remedy. This medicinal plant is especially appreciated for its complex positive effect in diseases of the cardiovascular system. Infusion of hawthorn fruit has cardiac and spasmolytic effects, moderately lowers blood pressure, calms the nervous system. This combination of therapeutic properties, especially in combination with a high content of vitamin C, makes it an important element of complex therapy in cardialgia, neurocirculatory dystonia and other cardiac and vascular disorders.
Species of the genus hawthorn (Crategus) family Rosaceae (Rosaceae). The Latin name of hawthorn comes from the Greek word cratas (“strong”), which probably reflects the ability of this plant to live up to 300 years.
Description: Hawthorn is a shrub or a small tree with shoots, seated with spines. Leaves alternate, with stipules, short-petioled, with large prongs; inflorescence – dense, multifloral scutes. In dried form: the fruits of hawthorn are apple-shaped, firm, wrinkled, from above with an annular rim, with 1-5 bones in the flesh of the fetus. The color of the fruit is from yellow-orange and brownish-red to dark brown or black, sometimes with a white coating of crystallized sugar. The smell is absent. The taste is sweetish.
Ingredients: Hawthorn fruits contain flavonoids (quercetin, hyperoside, vitexin), carotenoids, organic acids, sugars, etc.
Pharmacological action: reduces the excitability of the central nervous system and cardiac muscle, has selective antispasmodic effect.
The use of hawthorn for medicinal purposes has been known since the time of Dioscorides (1st century AD) as a means of treating heart diseases, insomnia, dizziness and dyspnea.
